Eagles conducted 3 STEM challenges this morning. They could build the tallest Eiffel Tower from cups, construct a bridge across the Seine (using only newspaper and tape) and/or recreate the Louvre pyramid from only straws and plasticine. We definitely have some budding engineers.

This week we have been exploring France - writing postcards from Paris, singing (and even teaching the whole school today!) a French greeting song, playing ‘un à dix’ maths games, learning the vocabulary for different colours and using them to create Monet garden inspired paintings. Whilst Year 1 identified the French word for different foods and categorised them using ‘J’aime’ and ‘J'aime ne pas’, Reception chose food for their own petit-déjeuner plate. To culminate our ‘Festivals around the World’ project, today Eagles tasted croissants and pain au chocolat and sampled fresh and dried fruit grown in Africa or the Caribbean. Do you recognise them all? Eagles loved the return of Forest School today. Can you spot which creature we discovered inhabiting their wooden home? For French week Kestrels have been learning the names of different animals and a song about visiting a farm which is very catchy. If you see someone from Kestrels class ask them to sing it to you! Want to check it out yourselves here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwdjLmjT0Jw
To build on this term’s ScratchJr learning, the Year 1’s current challenge is to design and build their own space race for three rockets. They designed on paper and later this week will use the iPads to create their own background and sprites and input and then test their algorithms. Meanwhile, the Reception’s challenge was to swap the background and cat sprite with a suitable alternatives then build a simple programme to make their space character move. This week, the Kites enjoyed attending the school's first art exhibition, where their work from throughout the year was displayed alongside that of the other classes. They were very proud to show their families round.
Kestrels have created their own pencil cases, practising their sewing skills and creating their own personalised designs on them.
The Kites have been decorating a tablecloth using fabric pens and pastels to display their food sculptures created with mod-roc.
To launch our 2nd key text “To carnival - a celebration in St Lucia” we listened and responded to different Caribbean music styles - reggae, calypso and steel pan drums. We identified the instruments and how the pieces made us feel. We discussed the differences in pitch, dynamics, tempo and pulse in Bob Marley’s “Three little birds”, Roaring Lions’ Mary Ann and the Pan Steel Orchestra. We responded to the music in different ways - singing, dancing and some of us even improvised our own instruments! Kestrels have been investigating the durability of different fabrics. They used sandpaper to replicate everyday wear and tear to see which materials were most durable.
