SCIB was set up (initiated by Thames Valley Police) to develop preventative education to help raise understanding of and aim to address key issues faced by the communities of Banbury.
The three major issues that children are falling victim to in Banbury are Substance Abuse, Misuse of Online Materials and Child Exploitation (including sexual exploitation). The proposal from the SCIB team is that in each long term, 4 lessons will be planned and resourced to be delivered through PSHE sessions in school. It became apparent that some teachers felt they needed more information to build their confidence or knowledge around delivering the content (e.g. I hadn’t heard of Nitrous Oxide but this is a real issue in Banbury). As a result, we have teamed up with professionals who will deliver short and fact-filled sessions that staff can attend related to the content they are delivering. This is a model we will follow for all of the three strands. The curriculum has been constructed around instilling protective behaviours for pupils to enable them to build the tools to keep themselves safe in unknown scenarios and then also include a ‘SCIB knowledge session‘ that addresses the strand. Children will be taught to understand their Early Warning Signs, Risk Assess and Take Action. The curriculum has taken objectives from the PSHE Association and links completely with expected coverage and so this can replace content of a similar nature or be used to enhance it.
