At Wroxton Primary School, we have a passion to make a difference. We aim to increase awareness of mental health and wellbeing, embedding a culture of resilience, acceptance and understanding. Wroxton Primary School is fortunate to have an ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) and Nurture Practitioner, Michelle Dowling. She is based in the Parish Room which is a private space for children to work to explore their mental health and wellbeing in a safe, warm and engaging space with an adult who is fully trained to meet the emotional needs of some of our children. ELSA acknowledges that children and young people learn best when they feel happier and their emotional needs are being addressed.
5 Ways to Wellbeing
We all need good mental health and wellbeing to live happy and healthy lives. It can help us sleep better, feel better, do the things we want to do and have more positive relationships. It can also help us deal with difficult times in the future.
Looking after our mental health is something that we should think about all the time. It isn't something to think about only when we are struggling, feeling low, anxious or stressed. It's something that we should invest our time and effort in, as we do with our physical health. There are lots of simple, everyday things that we can all do to improve our mental health and wellbeing.
Evidence suggests there are 5 steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing. Trying these things could help you feel more positive and able to get the most out of life.
1. Connect ... Build connections with the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections with support and enrich you every day.
2. Be Active... Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity that you enjoy; one that suits your level of mobility and fitness.
3. Take Notice.. Be Curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are on a train, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you. 4. Keep Learning.... Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take on a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident, as well as being fun to do.
5. Give... Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and will create connections with the people around you.
